In 1953, while still a student at St. Paul Humboldt High School, he got his first taste of the industry by starting in the mail room and as a propman at WMIN-TV, which later transformed into KARE-11. As he recalled, "I had only seen TV in the hardware store window. It was a chance opportunity that opened up when I was a senior, and I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of." This early exposure laid the foundation for his remarkable career.During his time at WMIN-TV, DeRusha quickly showed his enthusiasm and work ethic. He was always eager to learn and take on new challenges, which led to him moving up the ranks within the station. His dedication and talent did not go unnoticed, and he soon became an integral part of the local television scene.

Induction into the Minnesota Broadcasters Hall of Fame

In 2015, DeRusha received the honor of being inducted into the Minnesota Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In his introductory video, he shared his love for the 20-year career he had in local television. "You couldn't wait to get to work the next day, because it was so much fun," he said. At the age of 82 and still actively working, he was asked about retirement. His response was simple: "It has been one great carnival ride, and I don't want it to stop." This statement encapsulated his love for his work and his unwillingness to give up on something that brought him so much joy.His career in the outdoor amusement business was just as fulfilling as his time in television. He was involved in various aspects of the industry, from managing amusement parks to organizing events.
