The annual Cumbria Food Awards are set to pay tribute to the late television chef Dave Myers by renaming their top prize in his honor. The prestigious award, now titled the Dave Myers Cumbrian Food and Drink Hero trophy, will be presented at this year's gala event on March 20th at Kendal College. Myers, who passed away in February 2024 after a battle with cancer, was celebrated for his contributions to culinary arts and his deep connection to his home county of Cumbria. This renaming reflects the organizers' appreciation for Myers' dedication to promoting local food heritage and his significant role in previous award ceremonies.
Co-organizer Michaela Robinson-Tate expressed that Myers held a special place in the hearts of many. She highlighted how he was immensely proud of Cumbria's rich food traditions and had even hosted the inaugural awards event in 2022. The decision to rename the top award came as a natural extension of his legacy and commitment to the region. TV chef Matt Tebbutt from BBC’s Saturday Kitchen will host this year’s ceremony, which is expected to draw an audience of 165 finalists, sponsors, and distinguished guests.
Lili, Myers' widow, conveyed her profound gratitude for the recognition, stating that it means everything to her. She emphasized the importance of knowing that her late husband's efforts were deeply appreciated. The evening promises to be both celebratory and reflective, honoring not only the achievements of the finalists but also the enduring impact of Myers' work in the culinary world.
Beyond the awards, plans are underway for a large-scale charity motorcycle rally known as Dave Day, scheduled to return in June. This event underscores the community's continued support and remembrance of Myers' contributions. Through these initiatives, the spirit of Dave Myers lives on, inspiring future generations of culinary enthusiasts and solidifying his legacy within the heart of Cumbria.
